Pacaya is where Guatemala lets you walk on geology that's still warm. An hour and a half from Antigua, the trail climbs through farmland and pine before the green stops abruptly at a black horizon of hardened lava.
Crossing those lava fields is the heart of the day: crunching over rock that flowed within living memory, steam rising from vents in the cooler months, the summit cone above and — on clear days — Agua, Acatenango and Fuego lined up across the valley.
The marshmallow part
In pockets of the lava field, volcanic heat rises close enough to the surface to toast a marshmallow on a long stick. When conditions allow, your guide knows where, and it is exactly as delightful as it sounds — especially with children. Geothermal conditions shift, so we promise the hike, the landscape and the views; the marshmallows come when the mountain cooperates, which is often.
