Thirty-seven volcanoes run down Guatemala's spine. Two of them, you can walk on this week.
From a rooftop in Antigua you can see three: Agua, perfectly conical and dormant; Acatenango, tall and climbable; and Fuego, which smokes on its own schedule. An hour south sits Pacaya, the most approachable of them all.
Volcanoes are the reason many travelers choose Guatemala, and they're also where honest guiding matters most. A volcano is not a theme park. Conditions change, access changes, and no one — including us — controls what Fuego does on the night you happen to be on the mountain. What we control is everything else: the guide, the equipment, the pacing, the safety margins and the plan B.
Two very different days
Pacaya
A gradual hike over old lava fields with horses available for tired legs — and marshmallows roasted over volcanic heat when conditions allow. The volcano day almost anyone can do.
Acatenango
A demanding overnight climb to 3,976 m with camp high on the flank, sunrise above the clouds, and a front-row seat toward Fuego. An achievement, not an outing.

Fuego is one of the most active volcanoes in Central America, and from Acatenango's camp its rumblings can be extraordinary. But activity varies week to week, clouds roll in, and quiet nights happen.
We sell the mountain, the sunrise, the altitude and the achievement — never a guaranteed show. Any operator who promises you an eruption is telling you what you want to hear.
