You hear Tikal before you see it. Howler monkeys start at first light, somewhere off in the canopy, and then the trail opens onto the Gran Plaza and two temples that have faced each other across it for thirteen centuries.
Tikal was one of the most powerful cities of the Maya world — at its height home to tens of thousands, warring and trading across the lowlands — before it emptied out in the 9th century and the forest closed over it. Today it's a national park inside the Maya Biosphere Reserve: part archaeology, part wildlife sanctuary. Toucans, coatis and spider monkeys are not a maybe; they're the commute.

Is Tikal worth it if I'm based in Antigua?

Can you do Tikal in one day?
It's possible on the first and last flights, but it makes for a long day and misses the best hours. One night in Petén transforms the experience.
