Antigua wakes slowly. Before seven, the streets belong to bread deliveries, church bells and the smell of woodsmoke, and Volcán de Agua stands at the end of almost every avenue like it was placed there on purpose.
The city was the Spanish colonial capital of Central America until earthquakes convinced the crown to move it in 1773. What the earthquakes left behind — roofless convents, cracked arches, courtyards reclaimed by bougainvillea — is now the most atmospheric small city in the region. You can cross it on foot in twenty minutes. You could also spend four days here and not run out of mornings.
Guate Private is based in Antigua. We don't visit this city — we live in it, which is why our walking days include the courtyard cafés, the quieter ruins and the food streets that don't appear on the standard circuit.

Two to four unhurried hours with a private local guide: the Santa Catalina Arch before the crowds, Parque Central and the Cathedral, a convent ruin chosen for the day's light, a proper coffee, and as much history — earthquakes, saints, coffee fortunes — as you want to hear.
