The airport zona — and the question of whether you need it at all.
Zona 13 exists, for travelers, because of one runway. La Aurora International (GUA) sits here, and around it has grown a quiet cluster of guesthouses and B&Bs whose entire purpose is the 6 a.m. flight — plus, less famously, the city's family corridor: the national zoo and the museum campus beside it.
First, the honest question: do you need an airport hotel at all? Often, no. Antigua is only about 1 to 1.5 hours away, and if your flight lands by mid-afternoon or leaves after mid-morning, sleeping in Antigua is almost always the better night. The Zona 13 guesthouse earns its keep in two cases: flights that land after dark, and departures early enough that a 4 a.m. Antigua pickup sounds worse than a five-minute one.
The part nobody mentions: the family corridor
Beside the airport runs a green strip most itineraries skip: La Aurora Zoo — genuinely well-kept, shaded and inexpensive — and the neighboring museum campus, led by the Museo Nacional de Arqueología y Etnología with its monumental Maya stelae and the great scale model of Tikal. For families with a spare morning before a flight, this corridor is a quietly excellent answer: animals for the kids, the Tikal model for everyone, ten minutes back to departures.
Staying near the airport, done right
The guesthouses here are small, family-run and practical — think early breakfasts and free airport runs, not resort amenities. If your schedule genuinely calls for one, they do the job well. If you'd rather have a real evening first, Zona 10 is only 15–25 minutes from the terminal and trades the shuttle for the city's best restaurants.

Where should I stay near Guatemala City airport?
For pure convenience, the small guesthouses of Zona 13, most within ten minutes of the terminal. For a better evening, Zona 10 is 15–25 minutes away. And if your flight times allow it, skipping the airport hotel for Antigua is usually the best answer of all.
Should I sleep near the airport or in Antigua before my flight?
If your flight leaves after about 9 a.m., Antigua works — expect a pre-dawn pickup of roughly three hours before departure. Earlier than that, a Zona 13 guesthouse buys you two or three extra hours of sleep.
Is there anything to do in Zona 13?
More than people expect: La Aurora Zoo and the national archaeology museum — home of the famous scale model of Tikal — sit beside the airport and fill a family morning well.
